Overview

Milestone. Child attempts to solve problems using trial-and-error, persists through challenge and begins to use language to reason through difficulties.

Why it matters. Problem-solving capacity predicts academic achievement, executive function development and resilience, built through play, not worksheets.

Section 2

Age-banded milestones

18–24 months
  • Tries 2–3 ways to reach a goal
  • Uses trial and error with simple toys
  • Requests help when stuck
2–3 years
  • Completes simple inset puzzles
  • Uses tools to reach objects
  • Persists on a task for 3–5 minutes
3–4 years
  • Solves 6–12 piece puzzles
  • Plans a simple sequence in play
  • Recovers from a mistake with support
4–5 years
  • Suggests solutions in play and conflict
  • Follows multi-step plans
  • Uses 'what if' thinking with prompts
Section 3

Red flags, when to seek support

If you notice one or more of these patterns, talk with a GP, child health nurse, speech pathologist or occupational therapist for further assessment.

  • Gives up immediately on any new task by age 3
  • No use of tools or trial and error by age 3
  • Extreme distress with any mistake that does not ease with support
  • No progress in complexity of play or puzzles over 6 months

Strategies & activities

Activities

  • Open-ended construction challenges: “Can you build a bridge for the car?”
  • Simple puzzles graded to the child’s current level
  • Water play with containers: filling, pouring, measuring
  • Obstacle courses with problem elements: “How do you get over this?”
  • Loose parts play: give materials without instructions and observe

Materials

  • Age-graded puzzles (knob → tray → jigsaw progression)
  • Construction materials: blocks, DUPLO, magnetic tiles
  • Loose parts: tubes, fabric, containers, natural materials
  • Open-ended art materials without predetermined outcomes

Speech pathologist

  • Building reasoning language: because, so, if, then, what happens if
  • Teaching self-talk strategies for problem solving: “What can I try?”
  • Expanding thinking through open questions, not leading questions

Occupational therapist

  • Assessing motor planning and its contribution to problem-solving play
  • Grading task complexity to the child’s current processing window
  • Supporting frustration tolerance in the context of cognitive challenge

Educator role

  • Resist solving it for them, say: “Hmm, I wonder what you could try?”
  • Narrate problem-solving processes aloud: “I’m going to try this piece here”
  • Celebrate effort and process, not just outcome: “You kept trying!”
  • Scaffold gradually: watch → suggest → do alongside → step back

Family support

  • Allow your child to struggle appropriately before stepping in
  • Name problem-solving processes at home: “What could we try?”
  • Provide open-ended toys at home: blocks, sand, water, art materials
  • Validate frustration while encouraging persistence: “It’s hard, and you can do it”

Signs of progress

  • 1Attempts multiple strategies before requesting adult help
  • 2Persists with a challenging task for increasing periods of time
  • 3Uses language to reason: “I’ll try the big one first”
  • 4Completes age-appropriate puzzles with decreasing adult support
